The Clinical Nutrition Supervisor oversees the operations and performance of clinical nutrition services within a healthcare setting, combining leadership, management, and clinical expertise to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care across diverse populations.
This role provides direct supervision to dietitians, diet technicians, and/or diet assistants, including managing daily operations, staff scheduling, and unit assignments. The supervisor supports recruitment, onboarding, and training efforts, while assigning responsibilities, monitoring performance, and offering ongoing guidance to support professional growth and a collaborative team environment.
Key responsibilities include evaluating staff performance in alignment with departmental goals, implementing targeted action plans for improvement, and leading regular meetings with registered dietitians (RDs), dietetic technicians (DTRs), and/or patient services teams.
The supervisor actively participates in quality improvement initiatives, staff development, and performance evaluations, and partners with interdisciplinary leadership to develop, update, and implement policies, procedures, and best practices.
Depending on location and operational needs, this position may also support Patient Services, the Nutrition Lab, Behavioral Health, and/or other specialty or unit-based areas.
*This is a limited appointment, expected to be 6 months.
Salary Range: $95,400-208,300/year
- Registered Dietitian (RD) credential, required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical nutrition experience in a healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including staff supervision, performance management, and team development.
- Strong operational knowledge, including staffing, workflow management, and resource planning.
- Proficiency in Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), including development and management of enteral nutrition (EN) and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) plans.
- Experience conducting comprehensive nutrition assessments, including lab interpretation, medical history review, Nutrition-Focused Physical Exams (NFPE), and malnutrition diagnosis.
- Excellent communication skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams; ability to apply structured communication approaches such as CICARE.
- Experience providing age-appropriate patient education to support adherence to nutrition care plans.
- Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment, with the ability to adjust interventions based on patient response and evolving conditions.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams to support patient-centered care.
- Effective time management skills, with the ability to prioritize clinical responsibilities, documentation, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Cultural competence and understanding of social determinants of health, with the ability to provide inclusive and respectful nutrition care.
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and nutrition software systems.
- Knowledge of food service systems, including menu planning and food safety standards.
- Ability to obtain and maintain specialty certifications or designations relevant to the department or unit (e.g., CCS panel), as applicable.
- Additional Requirements (as applicable by unit):
- Experience with breast milk nutrition lab equipment.
- Knowledge of infant formulas and breastmilk fortification.
