WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT
The UCLA Health Administrative Internship is hands-on and action-oriented, giving you the knowledge and experience necessary to take on the challenges of tomorrow’s health care field. You will be exposed to every area of healthcare delivery, attend regular meetings with senior leaders and project sponsors, and be involved in a variety of enterprise-wide projects and initiatives. At the end of the program, you’ll be able to showcase the knowledge and skills you’ve gained by presenting your project to UCLA Health senior leadership.
This year, we are excited to offer up to fifteen internship opportunities within key departments across our system. Individual department leaders will serve as your preceptors and guide your project work. More than that, the entire Administrative Intern cohort will learn with one another through a myriad of shadowing experiences, executive-facilitated discussions, and other community-building events.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The UCLA Health Administrative Fellowship is a 12-month project-based and action-oriented program that encourages learning across all aspects of health care delivery. As an Administrative Fellow, you will attend various executive leadership meetings, be involved in an array of enterprise-wide projects and initiatives, and lead different projects for the organization. Richard Azar, Chief Operating Officer of UCLA Health, provides executive sponsorship for the Administrative Fellowship program and preceptorship throughout the fellowship year. During your Administrative Fellowship, you will serve as a member of Richard’s senior operations leadership team, share recurring individualized meeting sessions with him, and experience executive-level decision making throughout the organization in your various meetings and projects.
Drew Weil, Director of Hospital Operations at UCLA Health, also works closely with the Administrative Fellows and Richard Azar to customize the fellowship experience, coordinate experiential learning, and guide the day-to-day aspects of the fellowship.
With our flexible structure, you will get to see and experience all areas of UCLA Health including the hospital system, ambulatory sites, faculty practice group, and shared service departments which compose our organization. Each project will have a sponsor who will work with you on project definition, execution, and dissemination of results.
At the conclusion of your journey at UCLA Health, you will have gained marketable core competencies in four major areas:
- Healthcare administration knowledge, including operational planning and system improvement in a hospital, clinic, and academic setting
- Interpersonal and communication skills while working with physician and administrative colleagues on various projects
- Professionalism and leadership skills
- Analytical and critical thinking skills, business planning and financial analysis

Each Administrative Internship position will have their own department-specific preceptor. This person will help assist Administrative Interns throughout the summer and provide coaching and guidance on a day-to-day basis. In addition to these preceptors, Richard Azar, the COO of UCLA Health serves as the Executive Sponsor to the Administrative Internship program.
How will I be paired with a department’s Administrative Internship position?
At the time of application, applicants will select the top four departments where they’d like to complete an Administrative Internship at UCLA Health. After all interviews have been completed, the applicants will create their ranked list of preferred internship placements. With this information, we will be able to find pairings that maximize the applicant’s and department’s preferences.
What is the duration of the Internship? Is it paid or unpaid?
The Administrative Internship is a 10-12-week paid program.
When does the Internship start?
The start date for all Summer Administrative Interns is late May to early June.
Who is eligible to apply for the Internship?
Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s program with projected graduation in or after September 2024.
How many interns does UCLA Health hire?
We plan on hiring up to 15 interns next summer.
If you will complete your Master’s degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Nursing, Public Health, Health Informatics or another related field from an accredited program by summer 2024, you are a candidate for the UCLA Health Administrative Fellowship. The UCLA Health Undergraduate Student Summer Internship program is an exciting 10 week summer program designed to provide exposure to professional careers in healthcare, obtain work experience and develop work habits and communication skills that can be helpful in shaping future career interests.
Who is eligible for the program?
Applicants must be current undergraduate students or be graduating high school seniors and enrolled in an undergraduate program.
I was a part of the program last year. Am I eligible to return?
Unfortunately, no. We want to provide this experience to as many individuals as we can in order for new individuals to gain the perspective that past students have and to enrich our organization with new perspectives each year. This will also mirror our Graduate Administrative Internship which is a unique, one-time experience.
Is this a paid program?
Yes, the hourly wage is $20.00.
How many hours will I work a week?
You will work no more than 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, during normal business hours.
When will I need to be available?
Employees are expected to be available for 10 weeks beginning the first week of June through August. Flexibility can be accommodated to students who are on a quarter system.
How are students selected for this program?
Selection is based on the needs of UCLA Health departments. Departments request students with specific skills and knowledge areas or who have a strong interest in a particular field.
How many students will be selected?
Each department will indicate their interest this year regarding the number of interns they will be accepting. During the application process, you will be asked to provide your top three choices and, if offered, we will do our best to place you in an area that you have selected.

Smirthy Ganesan
Smirthy Ganesan joins UCLA Health after completing her MPH in Healthcare Management from the Yale School of Public Health. Smirthy has roots in India and Australia, and she received her Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from Earlham College. Smirthy served as one of the Executive members of the Annual Yale Healthcare Conference team where she was responsible for ideating, developing and coordinating panel discussions on the role of transformative leadership in fostering a dynamic and inclusive healthcare workforce. She also worked closely with the Anchor Mission at Yale-New Haven Health system on building partnerships with local vocational institutions to strategically promote local, inclusive hiring practices. Smirthy was the recipient of the merit-based Horstmann Scholarship at Yale University and the Russell M. Lowell Award for her outstanding work in Biomedical Research at Earlham College. Smirthy is passionate about promoting health equity and advancing health justice, increasing access to primary care, and supporting the provision of holistic, person-centered care.
Alyssa Schlegel
Alyssa is a Master of Business Administration and Master of Health Administration candidate at the Baylor Hankamer School of Business through the U.S. Army-Baylor Program. Alyssa is an active-duty Army Major with ten years of experience leading healthcare personnel in combat units and military healthcare facilities as a Medical Operations Officer, Chief, Managed Care Division, and Commander. She most recently served as the Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB) Test Control Office Officer in Charge at Fort Sam Houston, TX. While assigned to this role, Alyssa and her team modernized testing standards and managed EFMB events worldwide. She has roots in Pennsylvania and Connecticut and received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA. Her military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Expert Field Medical Badge. Alyssa’s healthcare interests include diversity, equity, and inclusion, upstream health, process improvement and efficiency, and enabling safe, affordable, and accessible healthcare for all.

Richard Azar, Chief Operating Officer of UCLA Health, provides executive sponsorship for the Administrative Fellowship program and preceptorship throughout the fellowship year. Drew Weil, Director of Hospital Operations at UCLA Health, also works closely with the Administrative Fellows and Richard Azar to customize the fellowship experience, coordinate experiential learning, and guide the day-to-day aspects of the fellowship.
How is the Administrative Fellowship structured? Is it rotational or project-based?
The Fellowship is a 12-month, project-based program. The Administrative Fellow will get to see and experience all areas of UCLA Health including the hospital system, ambulatory sites, faculty practice group, and shared services that compose our organization. The interests of the Administrative Fellow as well as intuitional needs guide project selection.
Is the Administrative Fellowship a paid position?
Fellows are considered full-time employees and are paid a salary for the 12-month duration of the program. As such, the Fellow is eligible for employee benefits including health insurance coverage, retirement savings, and paid time off. For more information, please visit www.uclahealthcareers.org.
How many Administrative Fellows will UCLA Health hire in the 2024-2025 Fellowship year?
UCLA Health anticipates hiring one Administrative Fellow each year. In addition, since 2013, UCLA Health has partnered with Army-Baylor to provide an Administrative Fellowship position to an active-duty military officer completing their MHA. Upon completion of the 12-month fellowship, the Army-Baylor Fellow returns to a military position.
What specific graduate degrees are accepted for application to the program?
MHA, MBA, MSN, MPH, MHI or Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited program. Graduate programs with a required fellowship or residency prior to graduation are eligible.
Will UCLA Health accept Administrative Fellows who obtained their graduate degree in previous years?
We welcome applicants with a variety of experience, including those with work experience as well as recent graduates. The UCLA Health Administrative Fellowship is typically geared toward early careerists.
Are international applicants eligible for consideration?
UCLA Health does not currently offer visa sponsorship for the Administrative Fellowship.
Can applicants submit materials electronically?
Yes.
