Dr. Benedict Cassen of the UCLA Department of Radiology develops the rectilinear scintillation scanner.

1956

UCLA Health performs the first open-heart surgery in Western United States.

1958

UCLA Health researchers develop the first techniques for fetal monitoring.

1962

UCLA Health develops nerve transplantation techniques.

1964

We create the international industry standard test for tissue typing.

1974

UCLA Health develops positron emission tomography (PET) technology.

1976

We perform the first total shoulder replacement.

1987

Bone marrow, kidney, heart, liver, and pancreas transplant services are offered at one hospital for the first time in the Western United States.

1993

We complete the first successful live donor liver transplantation in Southern California.

1998

UCLA Health Professor Louis J. Ignarro wins the Nobel Prize.

1999

Dr. Michael Phelps, chair of the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology and inventor of PET scanning, is awarded the Enrico Fermi Award.

2001

UCLA Health plastic surgeon, Dr. Marc Hedrick and his research team make a breakthrough in the harvesting of stem cells.

2003

A new vaccine based on UCLA Health research is shown to stop the progression of Type 1 diabetes.

2005

UCLA Medical Center receives Magnet® Designation from the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).

2009

UCLA Health Cardiologist, Dr. Jesus Araujo is honored for research on the effect of air pollution on heart health.

2010

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is re-designated as a Magnet Hospital.

2011

UCLA Division of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery receives a “3 star” rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

2012

Expanded campus in Santa Monica opens, including UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica; UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital; the Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital; and the UCLA Rape Treatment Center.

2016

UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, achieves Magnet status.

UCLA scientists develop a roadmap for personalized brain cancer treatment.

UCLA Health has the largest combined heart-lung transplant program in the country.

We performed our 6,000th liver transplant in June 2016 – the highest number of liver transplants performed at any one center in the U.S.

lung transplantation

We performed our 1,000th lung transplantation in September 2016, becoming the first program on the West Coast, and one of only seven centers nationwide to do so.
