Under general supervision of the supervisor, The Staff Research Associate III will provide technical and para-veterinary services to support the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine’s (DLAM) mission and objectives. Major duties include but are not limited to assisting in Breeding Colony Management (BCM), providing veterinary support services, quality control, training and programmatic support to Senior Management.
Annual Salary Range: $69,752.83 – $112,171.84
All Required:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in related field, and/or equivalent experience/training
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to work accurately and with detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate professionally and courteously with a wide variety of people that have varying degrees of veterinary medical training (from DLAM staff to faculty and their staff), by phone, email and in person.
- Ability to complete tasks in an orderly and timely fashion, and to adjust to changes in the workload, prioritizing tasks.
- Ability to work independently on a self-directed basis prioritizing and organizing fluctuating workload.
- Ability to use/learn full capability of word processing software, e-mail, spreadsheets, the internet and other computer programs, such as Transnetyx Colony, Safety Culture and Cayuse/eSirius.
- Ability to recognize and describe signs of clinical disease or injury in laboratory mice.
- Ability to effectively handle and restrain mice.
- Skill in writing clear and concise correspondence for a variety of audiences.
- In-depth knowledge of animal research facility.
- Comprehensive knowledge of rodent anatomy, biology, and reproduction.
- Demonstrated knowledge of genetics and transgenic technology.
- Knowledge of mouse nomenclature.
- Knowledge of and the ability to apply the concept of contamination control practices including engineering, administrative, and procedural controls for the containment of pathogens, including disinfection, and waste handling.
- Ability to euthanize mice using CO2 chambers. Must be able to follow the procedures for euthanasia including the use of the CO2 chamber, as well as be able to ascertain that death has occurred. Knowledge of appropriate labeling and disposal of the animals euthanized.
- Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
- Ability to be trained on a wide variety of topics, compile that information, and then successfully train others on this same information.
- Ability to analyze information, problems, and procedures to define problems and formulate viable alternatives.
- Knowledge of basic para-veterinary skills (health case handling, treatments) for mice.
