The Ophthalmic Technician Supervisor for the Retina division in Westwood will oversee daily clinical workflows to ensure efficient patient care delivery and high-quality support for physicians. This role is responsible for supervising a team of back office staff, coordinating staffing, and provide direct patient care. The Supervisor also serves as a lead resource in clinical support functions, ensuring adherence to departmental standards and providing hands-on guidance when needed. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supervise and assign work to a team of ultrasound staff, ophthalmic technicians, medical photography, and nursing
- Manage recruitment, interviewing, and selection of new staff members
- Provide training and conduct evaluations to ensure competency and performance standards are met
- Develop and manage weekly staff schedules, including real-time adjustments and last-minute coverage needs
- Oversee and support patient flow, providing direction to ophthalmic technicians and collaborating with ophthalmologists to improve efficiency
- Obtain patient medical histories, document chief complaints, and perform vision testing
- Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure and pulse
- Perform diagnostic imaging and perimetry testing
- Assist ophthalmologists with procedures, including administering injections
- Current certification as Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT).
- Minimum 5 years recent experience providing technical support in Ophthalmology practice.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience as required.
- Ability to collaborate with Practice Manager and/or Associate Administrator in problem solving and implementing new and continuing patient care systems.
- Ability to organize technician work schedules for continuous coverage.
- Knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology of visual systems.
- Skill in acquiring accurate medical history, measuring, and recording visual acuity, and tonometry.
- Familiarity with signs and symptoms of various ophthalmic problems to answer patient-related questions and triage calls when urgent evaluation is required.
- Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of patient-related testing equipment.
- Knowledge of various ophthalmic clinical protocols.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to promote comfortable, cooperative and effective working relationships with patients, physicians and staff.
- Ability to identify and define complex problems and develop and implement solutions for quality and process improvement.
- Familiarity with computerized EHR(s) and patient appointment scheduling system(s).
- Ability to analyze clinical and administrative information to determine appropriate course(s) of action to resolve conflicts and discrepancies.
- Flexibility in adapting to new assignments.
- Ability to learn state of the art diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to organize and prioritize duties to maximize clinic efficiency.
- Experience working in a university-based medical facility/academic teaching environment.
