As a member of the patient care team at Mattel Children’s Health locations, the Medical Assistant participates in the total patient care for children and adults in the ambulatory setting, recognizing normal and abnormal signs and symptoms and life threatening emergencies. Duties include providing back office patient care, rooming patients, taking and recording vital patient information, prepare and administrater medication, managing patient flow, maintenance of the patient rooms. Act as a staff person in the office, assisting in patient care, and maintain high standards of care in the various ambulatory offices.
Salary range: $28.06/hr – $37.02/hr
Required:
- Certificate as a Medical Assistant, completion of authorized program by the Dept. of Education or post secondary institution accredited or approved by the bureau of Private Post Secondary and Vocational education in the Dept. of Consumer Affairs
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification (CPT I or II). Ability to perform venipuncture with skill and proof of minimum training which includes 10 hours of training in venipuncture and skin puncture for the purpose of withdrawing blood, adhering to all OSHA PPE safety requirements.
- Knowledge of normal and abnormal symptomatology and life threatening medical problems
- Ability to obtain accurate vital signs and drug refills.
- Ability to assist in medical emergencies and office procedures.
- Ability to skillfully administer oral, IM and subcutaneous medications
- Skill to accurately perform a 12-lead EKG.
- Knowledge and ability to set up and assist physician with any procedures such as, but not limited to audiometry, spirometry, O2 saturation levels, skin tag and mole removals, ear lavage, colposcopies, flexible sigmoidscopies.
- Ability to use computer to access patient information in an electronic health record (EHR)
- Skill in writing grammatically correct and accurate nursing notes.
- Skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and others in the Department of Pediatrics.
- Ability to organize tasks to facilitate smooth work/patient flow
- Ability to order medical and clinical supplies and maintain adequate inventory.
- Skill in performing responsibilities with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
- Ability to screen incoming patients and/or telephone call inquiries
- Ability to communicate effectively to obtain and relay patient information.
- Ability to be flexible in working both back and front office to facilitate smooth workflow
- Ability to be flexible in working location, to float to different offices and therefore travel to various locations.
- Ability to perform the functions of patient encounters registration and appointment, scheduling, using a computerized system.
- Strong communication skills to interact diplomatically with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds to obtain information and explain the department’s policies as they relate to appointment scheduling, billing and collections, and registration
- Ability to make independent decisions regarding actions to be taken.
- Skill in organizing and prioritizing assignments and minimizing duplication of effort
- Skill in working independently and completing assignments with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain neatness and cleanliness of work section.
- Ability to work effectively under a rotating work assignment system.
Preferred:
- Expertise, skills, and knowledge in working with pediatric patients.
- Knowledge of child safety measures
- Skill in working knowledge of University, Hospital, Nursing Service, and personnel policies and procedures.in inventory control sufficient to maintain adequate supplies and equipment.
- Knowledge to schedule patient for referrals to specialists.
- Working knowledge of Medi-Cal, CCS, HMO’s, PPO’s, third party payors, etc., authorizations and eligibility requirements and regulations Ability to enter the correct insurance information into the Medical Center’s computer system and assign accurate payor class codes.
- Skill in computing ratios, rates, and percentages to assign appropriate changes to patients and provide correct change for cash payments.
- General knowledge of medical terminology and ICD-10 coding
- English/Spanish bilingual oral communication skills.
- Ability to assist in orientation of new staff
