We are seeking a dedicated Ophthalmic Technician I Floater to provide technical ophthalmic assistance, patient care, and administrative support to our medical offices at the Doheny Eye Centers in Arcadia, Orange County, and Pasadena. The OT will work alongside other technicians and physicians to ensure high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform imaging and diagnostic testing, including OCT, visual fields, and other specialized tests.
- Assist in the setup and execution of minor ophthalmic procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are prepared.
- Conduct preliminary eye examinations and accurately document patient medical histories.
- Educate patients on eye care, treatment plans, and post-procedure instructions.
- Maintain and sterilize ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Assist in obtaining prior authorizations.
- Assist with inventory management, including ordering and stocking supplies.
Salary Range: $33.02-43.56 Hourly
This position will function as a floater between multiple UCLA Health locations in the Department of Ophthalmology and will be assigned to a satellite location as needed to provide patient care services. Ability to travel is required.
Required:
- Knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology, basic ocular anatomy, basic ocular physiology, basic ocular pharmacology, common diseases of the eye.
- Knowledge in basic ophthalmic treatments, medical emergencies, and other various ophthalmic clinical protocols.
- Knowledge of basic diagnostic ophthalmic medications used in clinic.
- Knowledge of ophthalmic instruments and their corresponding sterilization / high level disinfection techniques.
- Ability to adapt between multispecialty services.
- Ability to be flexible with requests from physicians, managers, and staff.
- Ability to organize workload, prioritize duties & tasks, with attention to time sensitive items & crucial deadlines to maximize clinic efficiency.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively, while maintaining comfortable and cooperative working relationships with physicians, patients, and peers.
- Ability to work under pressure in a busy clinic.
- Ability to work as a team member in a busy ophthalmic setting.
- Ability to work independently with initiative to work on a self-directed basis, with limited supervision at times.
- Ability to follow through on tasks to completion.
- Ability to type with speed and accuracy.
- Ability to convey information concisely, clearly, edit, and proofread to ensure grammatically correct and factual correspondence.
- Ability to assess clinical information and determine when to get assistance to help avoid conflicts or discrepancies.

- Knowledge of operating and maintaining ophthalmic equipment and patient testing devices.

- Maintain any necessary certifications needed for patient care, including but not limited to research certifications and or any other ophthalmic related trainings, classes, or required programs.
Preferred:
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or minimum of 3+ years of experience working in the ophthalmic setting with patients and ophthalmic imaging devices (COA certification completion contingency upon one year of hire requirement.)
- Fluorescein angiography, UBM, Bscan, Konan, Keratometry, and other specialty imaging.
- Certifications in Imaging.
- ERG experience.
- Multilingual
- Prior back-office coordination helpful.
- Experience with electronic health records (EHR, EMR, Epic).
- Experience with Care Connect.
- Exposure to research imaging.
