UCLA Health IT is seeking an exceptional Analytics Observability Engineer to join the Solutions Architecture and Engineering (SAE) team. The SAE team’s mission is to ensure that our On-premises and Cloud infrastructure stays ahead of rapid customer growth by maintaining service reliability, performance, efficiency, and security. The ideal candidate will play a key role in supporting and advancing the organization’s Data and AI platforms, ensuring their reliability, performance, and security.
As an Analytics Observability Engineer, you will design, implement, and maintain observability solutions that ensure optimal performance for our SQL Server, other database environments and manage enterprise observability infrastructure and monitoring tools. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop robust monitoring and alerting systems, analyze system performance, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This role requires a solid foundation in On-premises and Cloud computing, Windows and Linux administration, database technologies, Citrix virtualization, DevOps principles, and automation. A deep understanding of server hardware, networking, storage, and data center operations related to Microsoft SQL Server is essential.
In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and operating infrastructure and applications for Analytics Platforms across both On-premises and Cloud environments. You will troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve environment issues while building monitoring solutions and tools to automate routine operational activities. Your efforts will help ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of the analytics platforms by measuring and monitoring all systems with an eye toward availability, latency, and overall system health.
Additionally, you will collaborate with internal and external teams to gather stakeholder requirements and design technical solutions that meet organizational needs. You will independently and collaboratively work with SAE and other OHIA groups to maintain and optimize database environments through observability practices. By designing and implementing effective solutions, you will enable proactive identification and resolution of issues while providing actionable insights to improve system performance and scalability.

This is a flex-hybrid role which will require you to be on site at least 5% (3 days) – 10% (6 days) of the time or as required by operational need; there are no reimbursements for travel to “home office” location. Each employee must complete a FlexWork Agreement with their manager which will outline arrangement parameters and aids both parties in fully understanding expectations. Arrangements are regularly evaluated, and are subject to termination.
Salary offers are determined based on various factors including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, and equity. The full salary range for this position is $102,500 – $227,700 annually. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is approximately between the minimum and midpoint.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent).
- 10+ years of experience with enterprise-scale Linux, Windows, and Database technologies.
- 7+ years of experience implementing and managing observability frameworks for analytics platforms or databases. Knowledge of managing and optimizing SQL Server environments (or equivalent database systems) in On-premises and Cloud environments. Knowledge in SQL Server administration and performance tuning, including query performance tuning, backup and recovery, and database security best practices.
- 5+ years of experience with Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and hybrid Cloud environments.
- Strong understanding of monitoring and observability principles for analytics and database systems.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar for automation and task optimization.
- Proven ability to automate processes using tools like Terraform, Chef, Puppet, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or AWS CloudFormation.
- Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
- Strong understanding of server hardware, networking, storage, virtualization, and collaboration tools.
- Working knowledge of DevOps principles and practices.
- Experience in a healthcare or regulated industry is a plus.
- Preferred certifications include:
- Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional)
- Microsoft Certified Azure Database Administrator Associate
- DataDog Certified Observability Engineer
- Splunk Core Certified User
- ITIL Foundation Certification
