Job Duties
Responsibilities

This position will act as a liaison with UCLA Marketing and Communications to develop and execute strategic, comprehensive, proactive media relations plans of national impact in support of UCLA Neurology by adhering to UCLA policy for social media and digital web. Responsibilities include:
Developing video and print based content and placing/promoting said content in an increasingly competitive environment
Building relationships with faculty and media representatives; responding promptly to social media requests; helping faculty promote their research and develop media tools.
Collaborating with Development personnel in the creation of donor targeted materials.
writing clinical and research articles and research alerts; and translating complex, scientific topics into understandable and compelling
Providing advice and counsel to researchers on how best to promote their scientific discoveries, including non-traditional media such as blogs and other social media; remaining dynamically engaged with faculty to make sure the most up to date content and media are promoted.
Managing social media inquiries for content
Coordinating communication for Neurology programs to media that serve culturally diverse communities.

Job Qualifications
Qualifications

Outstanding written and oral communications skills. Required
Solid professional judgment. Required
Demonstrated record of successful national, regional and local media relations planning, implementation and placement. Required
Extensive media contacts at key local, California and national media. Preferred
Demonstrated reporting and writing skills that meet journalistic codes and are suitable for publications, newspapers, magazine and broadcast on radio and television and social media. Ability to collaborate with freelance photographers and videographers to produce visuals, including photos and/or video that accompany press releases. Preferred
Demonstrated skills in journalistic writing and interpreting medical and scientific information for general readers. Required
Demonstrated ability to anticipate public events that can be used to advance institutional objectives. Required
Demonstrated ability to successfully coordinate multiple ongoing tasks and responsibilities of varying degrees of complexity simultaneously. Required
Demonstrated interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, volunteers, students, patients and administrators; ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other units as well as external individuals and groups. Required
Demonstrated skill in creating and managing a comprehensive media relations plan, including handling a high volume of media inquiries often with simultaneous deadlines. Required
Demonstrated computer and iPhone/Smartphone literacy; experience with social media, the worldwide web and its communications potential. Required
Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to changing priorities. Required
Thorough knowledge and understanding of current events, issues and developments in the subject areas of health care and medical research. Required
Demonstrated record of implementing new technologies and new communication tools; including use of both still and video cameras. Required
Ability to work independently and set priorities that advance institutional mission and visibility. Required
Flexibility, initiative and self-motivated. Required
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education strongly preferred.
Minimum of 3 years full-time experience on the staff of a newspaper, radio, TV station, in-house PR team or PR agency. Preferred
Ability to speak and write Spanish preferred. Preferred
