Responsibilities

SUMMARY STATEMENT:
This position is for a part-time (45%) Laboratory Assistant to join the “Biological Anthropology of Motherhood Lab” at UCLA. We study biology, health and well-being of women during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and as grandmothers, and infant development, focusing on minority and low-income populations. We seek someone to help us with tasks related to our brand-new state-of-the-art biological laboratory.
TYPE OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Incumbent will work independently and report to Dr. Molly Fox, Director of the Director of the “Biological Anthropology of Motherhood Lab” at UCLA.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Research (70%)
o Design and implement protocols for running ELISA assays to measures hormones, cytokines, and other molecules in human body fluids
o Design and implement protocols for processing, storage, and shipment of specimens
o Train students and research assistants in lab techniques
o Prepare and maintain Institutional Review Boards (IRB) approval of studies
o Attend weekly meetings with research team
o Communicate as-needed with Primary Investigator Dr. Fox
o During research phases with low rates of biological laboratory activities, manage other research-related activities
Research Administration (30%)
o Design and implement protocols for quality checks and maintenance of laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuge, plate reader, plate washer, water purification system, etc)
o Create organizational systems and logs for managing warranties and maintenance contracts with equipment manufacturers and laboratory supplies and disposables
o Submit purchasing requests for lab supplies
o Liaising with UCLA administration / support departments

This is a 1 year limited position, may convert to career.

Job Qualifications

Qualifications

Required skills and experience:
– At least one year of experience in laboratory work (professional or educational)
– Experience running ELISA assays and troubleshooting
– Experience handling biological specimens
– Experience organizing laboratory specimens, reagents, equipment
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office
– Skill in written and spoken communication
– Ability to take the lead on projects and tasks, and get things done without instruction on each step
– Ability to manage time effectively, and make sound judgments and decisions
– High-level of ethical standards and honesty
Preferred skills and experience:
– Experience maintaining IRBs
– Knowledge of UCLA campus purchasing system
– Knowledge of relevant UCLA Office of Environment, Health, and Safety guidelines
– Interest and proficiency in learning new skills
– Team player
– Positive attitude
– Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred
